Smokey Smothers

Otis "Big Smokey" Smothers (* 21st March 1929 in Lexington , Mississippi , † 23 July 1993 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American blues - guitarist and singer.

When Howlin 'brought Wolf Smothers into the studio as a rhythm guitarist in 1956/57, Smothers already had around ten years of experience as a blues musician behind him. With Howlin 'Wolf he recorded songs like Who's Been Talking and Tell Me during this time . In 1960 Smothers worked with Freddy King and got a recording contract with Federal Records , where he also made some solo recordings. So he released his debut album Sings the Backporch Blues in 1961 .

Except for one single ( I Got My Eyes on You 1968), Smothers was not heard from for a long time until 1987 when the LP Got My Eyes on You was released on Red Beans Records . On July 23, 1993, Smokey Smothers died in Chicago.
