Hubert Sumlin (* 16th November 1931 in Greenwood , Mississippi , † 4. December 2011 in Wayne , New Jersey) was an American blues - guitarist , who primarily as a member of the band of Howlin 'Wolf was known.

Life

Sumlin was born in Mississippi but moved to Hughes , Arkansas, and grew up there when he was eight . Also at the age of eight he began to play his older brother's guitar until shortly afterwards his mother paid a full week's wages and bought him his own guitar. Sumlin began his musical career with the harmonica virtuoso James Cotton , with whom he played in juke joints , but also in a radio show at KWM in West Memphis . It was during these radio broadcasts that Sumlin met Howlin 'Wolf , who also appeared there and with whom he went to Chicago in 1954. He improved his technique on stage and soon took over the lead guitar in the band. In the early years in Chicago, Sumlin was temporarily recruited from Muddy Waters for his band, but returned to Howlin 'Wolf because touring with Waters was too strenuous for him.

Hubert Sumlin's guitar can be heard on a number of Howlin 'Wolf hits, including Wang Dang Doodle , Shake for Me , Hidden Charms , Three Hundred Pounds of Joy and Killing Floor . Sumlin's guitar playing is described by Bob Margolin, himself a guitarist, in Sumlin's biography as "between intense and legendary". Sumlin stayed with Howlin 'Wolf until his death in 1976. In between he also appeared solo or with other musicians. B. on the European tour in 1964, when he played with Sunnyland Slim and Willie Dixon in East Berlin. In 2008 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame .

In 1980 he left the Wolf Gang, which had continued to perform under the direction of Eddie Shaw after Howlin 'Wolf's death, to start a solo career. His legendary status as a guitarist is also demonstrated by the fact that many famous musicians cited Sumlin as a key influence - including Eric Clapton , Keith Richards , Robbie Robertson , Stevie Ray Vaughan , Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix . The Rolling Stones , who had admired Howlin 'Wolf and his band from their beginnings, ensured that the Howlin' Wolf Band made their first and only appearance on US television with Sumlin on Shindig in 1965 (the Stones had Howlin 'Wolf's song Little Red Rooster covered). In January 2003 the Rolling Stones invited Hubert Sumlin to play with them at Madison Square Garden . Keith Richards produced and recorded an album with him in 2000 because he was dying to play blues with Hubert Sumlin. The album was released in 2003.

Play style

Hubert Sumlin's guitar playing was at first strongly influenced by the acoustic Delta Blues , and Sumlin learned early on from the example of Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson and then first made the transition to the electric Chicago blues in West Memphis with Howlin Wolf and especially after his move to Chicago . Howlin Wolf, who himself played with Patton and Johnson, gave him his first electric guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop , in the mid-1950s .

Sumlin mainly played fingerstyle , but enriched this style with unusual improvisations and at the same time highly controlled play with seemingly wild beating on the strings. Bob Margolin described his style as follows: "When Hubert plays the guitar, he takes you into his world of blues, from despair to exuberance, from the finest grace to the grossest violence, from everything past to ever and ever. His style is whole and even original and his own and recognizable at any time. "

Awards

In 2008 Hubert Sumlin was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation . He was also a juror at the fifth Independent Music Awards.

In 2011, the Rolling Stone listed Sumlin at number 43 of the 100 best guitarists of all time . In a list from 2003 he was ranked 65th.

death

Hubert Sumlin died of heart failure in a Wayne, New Jersey hospital on December 4, 2011, at the age of 80. He still performed live well into old age. B. in summer 2010 at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival .
