Eddie Shaw (* 20th March 1937 in Stringtown , Bolivar County , Mississippi ; † 29. January 2018 ) was an American blues - and jazz - saxophonist .

life and work

Eddie Shaw was born in Stringtown, Mississippi , USA . As a teenager he played the tenor saxophone with various musicians, including Little Milton and Willie Love . At the age of 14 he played at a jam session in Greenville with Ike Turner's band . At a gig in Itta Bena , Mississippi, which he played when he was 20, he was invited by Muddy Waters to play in his band in Chicago .

Alongside AC Reed, Shaw became one of the most famous and sought-after tenor saxophonists on the scene. In 1972 he rose to Howlin 'Wolf as a band leader in his band, The Wolf Gang , and wrote about half of the songs on the 1973 album The Back Door Wolf. After Howlin' Wolf died in 1976, Shaw took over the band and their place of performance in 1815 club that was renamed Eddie's Place . He was the band leader of the Wolf Gang on the albums Living Chicago Blues Vol. 1 and Have Blues - Will Travel (1980) and recorded albums with various musicians for Isabel Records, Rooster Blues and Wolf Records.

In the late 1970s, Shaw began his solo career by appearing as a soloist in the Living Chicago Blues Anthologies (1978) of Alligator Records, as well as his own albums for Evidence and Rooster Blues, and later CDs for Rooster Blues ( In the Land of the Crossroads ) and Wolf ( Home Alone ). He also participated in The London Howlin 'Wolf Sessions , where he played jams with Eric Clapton , Bill Wyman and Ringo Starr , among others , as well as numerous well-known blues musicians such as Hound Dog Taylor , Freddie King , Otis Rush and Magic Sam (on his album Black Magic ).

In 2013 Eddie Shaw received the Blues Music Award in the “Instrumentalist - Horn” category, and in the same year he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame .
