Broch Doon Castle

Doon Castle , on the southern half of the Rhins of Galloway Peninsula , near Ardwell in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland , is a brochure on the narrow headland of Ardwell Point , south of Ardwell Bay on the North Channel . The majority of the Brochs are in northern Scotland and Doon Castle is the southernmost and best of a few examples in the southwest.

It should not be confused with Loch Doon Castle , a ruined castle on an island in Loch Doon, or Doon Fort in Donegal.

description

The Brochs square is cut off from the land by a wall and a ditch spanned by a dam. The brochure is comparatively well preserved. It has one access on the sea side and a second on the land side, which is very unusual and only understandable because of its location on the promontory. The chamber is over nine meters in diameter within a 3.75 m thick wall. The inside of the brochure is covered with rubble. The remains of the wall are up to a height of 1.8 m. There is a niche on the east side. There was probably a second on the west side. The outside narrower entrances have stops for the doors.

The outer work consists of a wall more than 2.6 m thick, which encloses an area of 14 m × 10 m between the broch and the end of the headland.
