(1962)

Moanin 'in the Moonlight is the first studio album by US blues musician Howlin' Wolf , released in 1959 on Chess Records . Strictly speaking, it is a compilation album that collects material that was previously released as a single . Therefore an unusually high number of different musicians can be heard on the album.

Moanin 'in the Moonlight was Wolf's first long-playing record. To date, his reputation had been based on various singles. Not all of the recordings on the album were produced by the Chess and / or Willie Dixon brothers . Two songs ( Moanin 'at Midnight and How Many More Years ) were recorded by Sam Phillips on Sun Records . Chess Records bought these recordings in order to be able to release them.

The album is considered one of the most important and best releases of the Chicago blues . The Rolling Stone lists it currently is ranked 154 of the 500 best albums of all time . Allmusic.com gives it five stars out of five.
