Leonhard Burckhardt

Leonhard Alexander Burckhardt (born June 4, 1953 in Basel ) is a Swiss historian and politician ( SP ).

Leonhard Burckhardt, son of the architect and politician Martin Burckhardt , grew up in Basel where in 1972, he at Humanistic Gymnasium am Münsterplatz the Matur completed. He then studied ancient history , modern history and economics at the Universities of Basel and Bern . In 1980 he completed his studies with a licentiate . In 1980 he became an assistant at the Seminar for Ancient History in Bern, the following year until 1984 and again in 1986 until the end of April 1992 as an assistant at the Seminar for Ancient History in Basel. 1986 Burckhardt was at Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg with a thesis on the Optimates in the late Roman Republic Strategies doctorate . In 1993, he completed his habilitation with the thesis Citizens and Soldiers at the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Basel . Aspects of the Political and Military Role of Athenian Citizens in the Warfare of the 4th Century BC Chr . Since then, Burckhardt has held several teaching positions at the universities of Basel, Bern, Zurich and Freiburg i. Br. And Freiburg i. Ü. inside. In 1999 he was awarded the title of adjunct professor by the University of Basel . He worked on the edition of the works of his distant relative Jacob Burckhardt , especially the new edition of the Greek cultural history . His other research interests include the military history of ancient Greece, early legalism and legislation, the history of Judaism in the time of Greco-Roman antiquity and the history of Attic democracy in the 4th century BC. And the history of the late Roman Republic.

Burckhardt became politically active in 1979 when he joined the SP, which is unusual in Basel for a member of the Burckhardt family , one of the " Daig " extended families in Old Basel , who are traditionally politically close to the LDP . In 1992 Burckhardt was elected to the Grand Council , of which he was a member until 2005 and chaired the 2003/04 office year. He has been on the Citizens' Council since 2005. From 2013 to 2019 he was a member of the Grand Council again. Burckhardt is entitled to reside in Basel.

Burckhardt is married and has two daughters.
