Alfred Remigius Weber

Alfred Remigius Weber-Oeri (born April 5, 1913 in Basel ; † January 29, 2006 there ) was a Swiss bank manager and local historian .

biography

Alfred R. Weber began his banking career as an apprentice at the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBV) in Basel. Later he was responsible for looking after the SBV art collection. Most recently, he was Vice Director of the SBV until his retirement in 1978. Weber wrote numerous articles on the history of banking in general and the bank association in particular, which were also published in the bank association's in-house magazine under the name "Remigius".

In his free time, Weber dealt with Basel's history and performed several functions in historical societies. He was accepted into the Basel Safran Guild in 1933 and was its governor from 1980 to 1986. He was also a master of the "Andrew Brotherhood". From 1938 to 1954 he worked for the Basel homeland security department and from 1961 to 1968 for the “Voluntary Basel Monument Preservation”. In 1948 he joined the Historical and Antiquarian Society in Basel . Since 1958 he was a member of the board. Together with Max Burckhardt and Edgar Bonjour , he was made an honorary member in 1990. In 1949 he joined the association for the Basel Historical Museum , where he was president from 1964 to 1967. From 1962 to 1969 he was president of the «Commission for Archaeological Soil Research in Basel-Stadt».

Weber wrote almost forty publications and maintained a private archive on Basel history. The Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Basel awarded Weber an honorary doctorate in 1980 for his services to research into the history of Basel .
