Johannes Burckhardt (officer)

Johannes Burckhardt (born October 6, 1798 in Basel , † May 21, 1855 in Muri near Bern ) was a Swiss officer .

Life

Johannes Burckhardt became a cadet in the Basel professional group in 1815. In 1816 he joined the newly founded Swiss Guard in Paris as an instructor , where he took part in the French invasion of Spain in 1823 and was awarded the Order of Ferdinand .

After the dissolution of the Swiss regiments after the French July Revolution of 1830 , Burckhardt returned to Basel and was elected commander of the professional troops in 1831, with whom he took part in the battle of the Hülftenschanz as the vanguard . In 1838 he became a federal officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel, and in 1842 he became the commander of the military school in Thun. In the Sonderbund War he was in command of the 2nd Division. His last assignment was in 1848 as the commandant of the troops from both Basels, which were called up to protect neutrality due to the Baden uprising .
