Johann Rudolf Burckhardt (born March 12, 1750 in Basel , † July 19, 1813 in Baden AG ) was a silk ribbon manufacturer , politician and friend of the fine arts . He belonged to the Basel patriciate .

Life

Johann Rudolf Burckhardt was born as the son of the Basel silk ribbon manufacturer Gedeon Burckhardt. At the age of 18 he married Anna Maria de Bary, the daughter of the mayor Johannes de Bary . After the divorce, he was married to Sarah Rohner, the daughter of the head clerk, from 1781.

Ascension, Condemnation, and Exile

With his silk ribbon factory and a forwarding company, Burckhardt became one of the wealthiest and most influential Basel residents of his time. This enabled him to commission the construction of his city palace, the Haus zum Kirschgarten , before 1777 . Burckhardt made a career in business, politics and the military. He had a seat in the Grand Council of Basel and in 1771 became director of the city's influential merchants. He fought in Swedish and British services. Burckhardt was an advocate of the Ancien Régime and rejected the new political ideas emanating from France since 1789 . He was in opposition to Peter Ochs , who was a representative of the Enlightenment . In keeping with his conservative outlook, he fought alongside Austria against the French Revolutionary Army . That is why Burckhardt was suspected of having helped the Austrian troops attack the Hüningen fortress as a hunter captain in 1796 . Burckhardt was tried. After serving his imprisonment, he voluntarily withdrew into exile in 1798. He spent most of his time on his country estate in Ernthalde in Gelterkinden . He never returned to the city of Basel. He died in 1813 while taking a spa stay in Baden. His son was the researcher Johann Ludwig Burckhardt , known as "Sheik Ibrahim" .

Art collector

Burckhardt, who was interested in art, owned an important art collection. He was in contact with some of the most famous artists and writers of his time. Including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Johann Joachim Winckelmann , Salomon Gessner , Johann Caspar Lavater , Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and Alexander Trippel . Through the mediation of Alexander Trippel, Burckhardt acquired the collection of plaster casts from the estate of Anton Raphael Mengs around 1780 .
