August Burckhardt-Brandenberg (birth name August Burckhardt , born February 16, 1896 in Basel , † November 8, 1987 ibid) was a Swiss classical philologist and archivist .

Life

August Burckhardt, the eldest son of the historian August Burckhardt (1868–1935) and Hedwig born. Burckhardt (1872–1958), attended primary school as well as the lower and upper grammar school in Basel. After graduating from high school in the spring of 1915, he completed the recruiting school in the summer and went to the University of Lausanne in the autumn of 1915 . He studied classical philology and history. In autumn 1917 he moved to the University of Basel ; He also spent two semesters at the University of Göttingen . After he had interrupted his studies several times because of the border service and for one semester due to illness, he closed it in 1924 with the promotion of Dr. phil. from. In addition to his doctoral supervisor Peter von der Mühll, he was influenced by the Indo-Europeanist Jacob Wackernagel and the historian Adolf Baumgartner .

After graduating, Burckhardt worked for a few years as a high school teacher before moving to the Basel-Stadt State Archives in the early 1930s . There he worked as an adjunct to the state archivist Paul Roth , as head of the reading room and the library. During this time he wrote small contributions to Greek and Latin antiquity as well as genealogical work. On March 1, 1961, he retired.

August Burckhardt was married to Margaritha geb. Brandenberg (1896-1988); since then the couple has had the alliance name Burckhardt-Brandenberg . Her daughter Anne-Marie (* 1930) married the archivist Wolfgang Wackernagel (1927–2000), a son of the folklorist Hans Georg Wackernagel .

  1. Burckhardt himself mentions this date in the vita of his dissertation (1924). It can also be found at Vera Isler . The anonymous obituary in the regional genealogist does not give an exact date of birth, but writes that Burckhardt died “at the age of 92”; so 1895 must be a misprint.
