Hans Georg Wackernagel (born July 24, 1895 in Basel , † December 23, 1967 in Riehen , reformed , resident in Basel) was a Swiss historian and folklorist .

life and work

Hans Georg Wackernagel, son of the Indo-Europeanist Jacob Wackernagel and brother of Jacob Wackernagel Jr. and grandson of the Germanist Wilhelm Wackernagel , studied history, classical philology and German in Geneva and Basel. In 1921 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate with a dissertation on the politics of the city of Basel in the years 1524–1528. In 1930 he became a private lecturer and in 1938 associate professor for historical auxiliary sciences and folklore of the Middle Ages at the University of Basel . He wrote fundamental works on topics of historical folklore. From 1941 he published the Basel register . In 1964 he received the Science Prize of the City of Basel for his scientific services.
