Jacob Wackernagel Jr. (born October 2, 1891 in Basel , † July 14, 1967 in Sardinia ) was a Swiss legal historian .

Jacob Wackernagel was a grandson of the Germanist Wilhelm Wackernagel and a son of the linguist Jakob Wackernagel and Marie, nee Stehlin. His brother was the folklorist Hans Georg Wackernagel and his uncle the historian Rudolf Wackernagel .

Wackernagel studied law at the Universities of Basel Lausanne , Berlin and Göttingen . Wackernagel received his doctorate in 1915 and completed his habilitation in Basel in 1918.

At the University of Basel , he was from 1924 to 1934 Associate Professor and from 1934 Professor of Tax Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, International Law and Legal History. In 1956 he was the rector of the university. From 1960 to 1966 he chaired the foundation that publishes the collection of Swiss legal sources . In his publications he mainly dealt with questions of medieval law and tax law.

Wackernagel married Rosalie, née Sarasin, in 1945. He died in Sardinia in 1967. The funeral service took place on July 21, 1967 in St. Alban's Church . Wackernagel found his final resting place in the Wolfgottesacker cemetery in Basel.
