Adolf Baumgartner

Adolf Baumgartner (born June 15, 1855 in Lörrach , † December 16, 1930 in Basel ; resident in Basel) was a Swiss classical philologist and historian of German origin.

Life

Baumgartner completed his education in Basel from 1871 to 1874 and studied history and classical philology at the Universities of Basel (1874 and 1875–1877, among others with Jacob Burckhardt and Friedrich Nietzsche ), Bonn (1874/75), Jena (1877/78, before especially with Erwin Rohde ) and Tübingen (1878/79). In 1879 he received his doctorate from Alfred von Gutschmid in Tübingen. During his studies he also did his German military service. In 1881 Baumgartner completed his habilitation at the University of Basel with a thesis on Armenian history for ancient history and historiography . On June 22, 1889 he was appointed associate professor and in 1891 full professor of general history (on the recommendation of Jacob Burckhardt). In 1898 he gave the official commemorative speech on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the so-called Basel Revolution in January 1798. In 1903 he was appointed a member of the commission of the Basel Historical Museum.

His estate is in the Basel University Library .
