Lukas Burckhardt

Lukas «Cheese» Burckhardt (born October 13, 1924 in Basel ; † May 3, 2018 there ) was a Swiss lawyer , politician ( LDP / LPS ) and jazz musician .

Burckhardt grew up in Basel as the son of the silk ribbon manufacturer Daniel Rudolf Burckhardt and his wife Esther Louise Burckhardt-Iselin. He completed the Matura at the Humanist Gymnasium and then studied law at the University of Basel . In 1948 he married Marischa Ruperti. In 1949 he received his doctorate in Basel. In 1952 Burckhardt passed the bar exam. In 1954/55 he completed a study visit to the USA . In 1954 he became deputy public prosecutor in Basel , and in 1958 he became a full public prosecutor. In 1960 he was elected President of the criminal court in Basel. In 1962 he was appointed special representative of the ICRC in the Congo .

Burckhardt belonged, traditionally for members of the Burckhardt family , to the Liberal Democratic Party. From 1966 to 1980 he was a member of the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt . After his resignation Burckhardt worked as business consultant and Bank Council Chairman of the Basler Kantonalbank operates; he was also President of the Liberal Party of Switzerland .

Burckhardt was also a hobby jazz musician and played the trumpet and cornet . In 1943 he performed with the College Swing Band in Basel; In other engagements of the band as a dance orchestra in Basel, he also played the violin and accordion. He could also be heard in the Café Java at jam sessions with Remo Rau and vibraphonist Body Buser; with the Hardys he recorded his first record ( jazz and spiritual national defense ). In 1944 he belonged to the Ensemble Varsity Club , which u. a. performed at the Dancing Odeon for a full month . Around 1946 he and his friends got to know the bebop ; He was also enthusiastic about modern jazz and appeared in 1948 with the Swiss All Star Bebop Team at the Jazz Festival in Nice (record in the same year in the band of Francis Burger). Burckhardt repeatedly made recordings with the Darktown Strutters (first in 1950), including with Wild Bill Davison . He also composed carnival marches , such as the Jeannot Blues for the opening of the Museum Tinguely . Between 1983 and 1995 he hosted jazz programs on the local radio station Radio Basilisk .
