Louis Guisan
Louis Guisan (born June 12, 1911 in Lausanne ; † July 13, 1998 there , entitled to live in Avenches ) was a Swiss politician ( LPS ).
biography
After attending schools and studying law at the University of Lausanne , Guisan continued his studies at the universities of Berlin , Kiel and Rome . In 1936 he received his doctorate. During his student days he became a member of the Swiss Zofinger Association . From 1938 he worked as a lawyer, first in Yverdon-les-Bains and from 1951 in Lausanne .
In 1941 he was elected to the municipal council of Yverdon, he held this office until 1952. From 1954 to 1966 he was State Councilor of the Canton of Vaud , where he headed the Department of Military and Insurance, and later the Department of Justice and Police. In 1955 he was elected to the National Council , in 1963 he moved to the Council of States . There he was a member of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe and a board member of the Swiss Lawyers' Association. Guisan presided over the LPS Switzerland from 1972 to 1976 and left the Council of States during this office (1975). From 1967 to 1978 he was President of the Organization of the Swiss Abroad .
Guisan was the leading figure of western Swiss liberalism and gave it new momentum and reformed it in the canton of Vaud. He successfully defended the takeover of the liberal-democratic Gazette de Lausanne by right-wing extremist circles.
In the Swiss Army he was a lieutenant colonel in the general staff .
