Pierre Weiss (born February 14, 1952 in Geneva ; † April 24, 2015 ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP The Liberals ).

biography

Pierre Weiss studied at the University of Geneva and obtained a licentiate in sociology , a licentiate and diploma in political science and a doctorate in economics and social sciences . From 1974 to 1981 he worked there as an assistant and between 1981 and 1986 he was a professor at the University of Geneva. He then worked as a part-time lecturer .

In 1986 he joined the Federation of French-speaking Companies in Geneva ( Fédération des entreprises romandes Genève ) as Director of the Documentation and Communication Department. From 1998 to 2000 he was a chronicler of the Le Temps newspaper and between 1992 and 2002 he was Secretary General of Swissmetro .

Weiss was married and had three grown children. He also had Italian citizenship, which he had acquired through marriage.

politics

In 2001 Weiss was elected to the Geneva Grand Council for the Liberal Party of Switzerland (LPS) . Between 2005 and 2007 he took over the presidency of the Liberal Group there. He was a member of various commissions. He failed twice in the election to the National Council .

At the national level, Pierre Weiss was already Vice-President of the LPS from 2002 to 2005. In 2005 he was elected political leader of the Union of Liberals and Liberals and on March 15, 2008 he was elected President of the LPS. From 2009 to 2012 he was Vice President of the successor party FDP, The Liberals .

Weiss was vice-president of LICRA-Geneva, a section of the non-governmental organization Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme .
