The Basler Kantonalbank is a universal bank owned by the canton of Basel-Stadt . It has a state guarantee and an AA + rating from Standard & Poor’s .

Basler Kantonalbank's private customers are either looked after in the branches or do their banking via the digital channel. The needs of local businesses are addressed in the SME Center. The bank also offers specific banking services for large corporate customers, institutional clients and banks from all over Switzerland. With this business model, BKB has a diversified earnings structure. Since 2000, BKB has held the majority in Bank Cler (the former Bank Coop) , which operates throughout Switzerland, and has been in full ownership since 2019. As a digital bank with a physical presence in urban areas, Bank Cler is operated separately. In addition to Bank Cler, Keen Innovation AG has also been part of the BKB Group since 2019. The BKB Group is one of the ten largest Swiss banks in terms of total assets.

Ownership

Basler Kantonalbank is an independent legal entity under cantonal public law (public law institution) in accordance with the law on Basler Kantonalbank of December 9, 2015. The canton of Basel-Stadt grants Basler Kantonalbank a subsidiary state guarantee. The canton is thus liable for all liabilities of the bank if its own resources are no longer sufficient to meet the liabilities. The state guarantee does not apply to the participation capital and subordinated liabilities of Basler Kantonalbank, the liabilities of Basler Kantonalbank to subsidiaries and controlled companies and their creditors or shareholders, and the liabilities of the subsidiaries and controlled companies themselves. The canton of Basel-Stadt receives from Basler Kantonalbank compensation for the state guarantee. In addition, as the owner, the canton receives interest on the endowment capital and a profit distribution from the annual profit.

The highest supervisory body of the Basler Kantonalbank is the bank council. This consists of nine members and has been chaired by Adrian Bult since April 1, 2017. Vice-president is Christine Hehli Hidber. The members and the presidium of the bank council are elected by the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt (executive branch of the canton).
