Foundation / emergence

1864: At the beginning of the 1860s, the canton of Basel-Landschaft had to contend with a severe shortage of money. The financial resources of the urban banking industry flowed into the emerging railway construction . It was no longer possible for private individuals to obtain loans without having to accept exorbitant interest . The difficult situation prompted the cantonal parliament to initiate the establishment of a cantonal bank. On July 10, 1864, the people adopted the Cantonal Bank Act with a large majority. Two months later the Banking Commission met for its first meeting. The canton provided the bank with a share capital of one million francs. Within four years the balance sheet total increased from 1.6 to 7.2 million francs.
