Share for CHF 250 in the Banque Cantonale du Valais on June 30, 1859

The Grand Council of the Canton of Valais decided in 1856 to found the first Walliser Kantonalbank ( French Banque Cantonale du Valais ) with the official goal of the future prosperity of the canton. The initial capital was 1.5 million francs or 6,000 shares at 250 francs. The canton brought in its guarantee and took over a fifth of the shares (1,200). The Walliser Kantonalbank began operations in 1858. After a few years, the Walliser Kantonalbank ran into economic difficulties because too many debtors could not repay their loans on time (and due to insufficient control mechanisms in the bank). More and more investors demanded the repayment of their money bonds and banks outside the canton wanted to give the Walliser Kantonalbank no more loans. Due to a lack of cash, the Walliser Kantonalbank finally had to cease operations. In January 1871 bankruptcy was declared.

In 1916 the people agreed to the (re) establishment of a Valais cantonal bank. The Walliser Kantonalbank , based in Sion, is the cantonal bank of the canton of Valais . It was founded in 1917 and is organized in the form of a stock corporation under public law. Its shares are listed on the Swiss Exchange SWX Swiss Exchange listed . The canton of Valais is the majority shareholder with a stake of 73.33 percent. The remaining almost 27 percent are distributed among over 14,000 shareholders. The bank has an unlimited state guarantee .

The bank has 43 branches in the canton. Her field of activity is traditionally in retail banking , mortgage lending , private banking and banking with small and medium-sized companies within her own canton. Walliser Kantonalbank employs 473 people and at the end of 2019 had total assets of 16.6 billion Swiss francs.
