The Banque Cantonale de Genève (BCGE; German Genfer Kantonalbank ), based in Geneva, is the cantonal bank of the Canton of Geneva . It emerged in 1994 from the merger of the Caisse d'épargne de la République et canton de Genève, founded in 1816, and the Banque hypothécaire du canton de Genève , founded in 1847 . The BCGE is organized in the form of a stock corporation under public law. The bearer shares BCGE is listed on the Swiss stock exchange SIX Swiss Exchange listed , while registered shares are fully owned by the canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva and the Geneva municipalities. The bank had a limited state guarantee ; the state guarantee was definitively canceled at the end of 2016.
The bank has 28 branches in the canton. Her field of activity is traditionally in retail banking , mortgage lending , private banking and banking with small and medium-sized companies within her own canton. In addition, it is also active in private banking throughout Switzerland via the Anker Bank, which was taken over in 1997 (which has been run as the BCGE Private Banking Switzerland business unit since 2008 ) and has had a subsidiary in France since 1993, which is primarily active in corporate finance and asset management .
