The Glarner Kantonalbank , based in Glarus, is the cantonal bank of the Canton of Glarus . It was founded in 1884 and is organized in the form of a special legal stock company . The bank has six branches in the canton and employs a total of around 291 people (including 16 apprentices and hourly wage employees, GLKB annual report 2016). At the end of 2017, the Glarner Kantonalbank had total assets of around 5.64 billion Swiss francs. In 2008, the bank posted a loss of 56 million Swiss francs between 2004 and 2007 due to a failed expansion strategy by the management team at the time. The canton then had to increase the bank's capital to a total of 80 million francs. The Glarner Kantonalbank has recovered well from this crisis and at the end of 2012 had an equity coverage ratio of over 200 percent. In 2012, the Glarner Kantonalbank launched an online mortgage with hypomat.ch . On this platform, homeowners from all over German-speaking Switzerland can redeem their existing first-rate mortgages online.

In addition to the classic advice in the mortgage and savings business, the commercial lending business as well as asset advice and asset management have gained in importance. Like the vast majority of all cantonal banks, the Glarus Institute also has a so-called state guarantee . This means that the canton is liable for the bank's liabilities.
