history

Zur Rose was founded in March 1993 by 21 doctors. Two months later they opened a pharmacy in Steckborn and began supplying doctors in the region. At the end of 1995, they gradually expanded the delivery of doctors to the whole of German-speaking Switzerland . In mid-1999, the company established the specialized delivery service along with the Polymed Medical Center AG PolyRose AG as a joint subsidiary. In October 1999 the company moved into the new logistics center in Frauenfeld with a total area of 4500 m².

In 2001, Zur Rose began shipping medicines to patients.

With the establishment of the subsidiary Zur Rose Pharma GmbH in Halle (Saale), the company expanded to Germany in 2004 and entered the pharmaceutical services business there. Business in Germany was expanded at the end of 2006 with the takeover of VfG Versandapotheke , based in the Czech Republic and operating in Germany.

In mid-2009, the Zur Rose Group sold its subsidiary Helvepharm AG, which specializes in generics , to the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis .

In October 2012 the Zur Rose Group took over the Dutch mail order pharmacy DocMorris from the pharmaceutical wholesaler Celesio for 25 million euros. This makes it the market leader in the German pharmaceutical mail order business, because with DocMorris and the two existing subsidiaries Zur Rose Pharma and VfG Versandapotheke, the Zur Rose Group has over two million customers in the German market.

In June 2014, the Zur Rose Group reduced the number of logistics locations from four to three and closed the logistics center in Česká Lípa in the Czech Republic . The mail order business and pharmaceutical services of the brands DocMorris and Zur Rose for the German and Austrian markets will from now on be operated from the Heerlen (NL) and Halle an der Saale (DE) locations.

In 2015, the Zur Rose Group took over a majority stake in BlueCare in Winterthur, a provider of networking systems in the Swiss healthcare sector.

As the Zur Rose Group announced in November 2017, it is taking over the Vitalsana BV mail-order pharmacy in Heerlen and the associated service provider ApDG GmbH in Ulm from Ströer SE & Co. KGaA . The takeover was successfully completed after approval by the competition authorities . In addition, Eurapon Pharmahandel GmbH in Bremen was taken over in the same year .

In September 2018, the Zur Rose Group took over the Spanish marketplace Promofarma.

In October 2018 the Zur Rose Group announced the acquisition of the medpex mail order pharmacy . With the takeover, the Zur Rose Group increases its share of the pharmaceutical sales in Germany from 18 to 31 percent. The merger was completed in January 2019.

In June 2020, the takeover of the mail order activities of the Apotal mail order pharmacy operated by Bad Apotheke, Bad Rothenfelde , which achieved sales of 157 million euros in 2019, by the Zur Rose Group became known. The transaction is subject to approval by the German Federal Cartel Office. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2020.

Mail order sales of prescription drugs has not yet been permitted in Austria, but the liberalization of non-prescription drugs is being used by other online providers besides Zur Rose.

Since 2013, the owner-operated mail order pharmacy Zur Rose in Halle has been the exclusive pharmacy partner of the German drugstore chain dm and as such is present in around 1,600 branches in Germany. Zur Rose Pharma GmbH provides various services on behalf of the mail order pharmacy. dm has thus ended its long-term cooperation with Europa Apotheek Venlo.
