history

Historical logo

Leclanché was founded in Yverdon-les-Bains in 1909 as a battery manufacturer. In 1918 the company opened its own test and development laboratory. Until 1997, the company manufactured various types of batteries and accumulators. From 1997 onwards the company pursued a diversification strategy, among other things photovoltaic cells were manufactured in the meantime. With the integration of Bullith AG, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Society , in 2006, the company changed from a traditional battery manufacturer to a developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion cells and complete energy storage systems in Europe. In 2008, Leclanché left the original historic site and moved to a modern production facility, which is also located in Yverdon-les-Bains. In 2013, Precept joined as a strategic investor. In mid-2014, the outstanding loan was converted into shares, as a result of which the investor increased his majority of shares to over 90 percent.

Company data

The company employed around 100 people in 2013 and is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (LECN). It has its main and development headquarters in Yverdon-les-Bains (Switzerland) and a production site in Willstätt (Germany). In Willstätt, the company has a fully automated production facility for lithium titanate cells . The number of employees at the German location is almost 60.

Consolidated sales for the 2017 fiscal year amounted to CHF 18 million after CHF 28.5 million in 2016. EBITDA showed a loss of CHF 31.8 compared to a loss of CHF 28.4 in 2016.

Production program

Leclanché has specialized in the production of lithium-ion cells for private homes, industrial plants (also container-based) and network operators, which are mainly used in the field of renewable energies. Another focus is the development of mobile energy storage devices, for example for medical technology. The production of the large-format lithium titanate cells with a patented ceramic separator began in mid-2012. The production of the A4-sized cells is water-based, so that no solvents are required. According to the manufacturer, the batteries can withstand 15,000 charging and discharging cycles. In March 2014, the company presented the TiBox, an energy storage device specially designed for use in private homes.

Cooperations

The company maintains a large number of partnerships in the areas of technology, marketing and sales. The most important include the collaboration with the US Precept subsidiary Oakridge Global Energy Solutions to strengthen activities in the US market and a development agreement with Saint-Gobain ; the latter is used to develop a new ceramic separator. Leclanché is a member of the German Energy Storage Association.
