The company was founded in 1807 when Heinrich Bucher-Weiss (1784–1850) took over a forge in Murzeln in Niederweningen. The forge was operated by three generations and entered in the commercial register in 1874. At the end of the 19th century, Bucher also began selling agricultural machines from foreign manufacturers.

Bucher expanded its activities in the first half of the 20th century. In 1951 the former family company was converted into a stock corporation.

In 1984 the group of companies adopted a holding structure . In 1986 the company opened to the public and went public . At that time, the group generated sales of CHF 430 million and had 2,730 employees. Bucher's expansion and takeover phase began with the IPO. This resulted in the division into today's four divisions and individual businesses from 1996 onwards.
