history

In 1990 Marc Bürki and Paolo Buzzi founded a company specializing in financial software and Internet applications: Marvel Communications SA.

This company paved the way for the Swissquote financial platform, which was launched in 1996. It gives private investors free and real-time access to the prices of all securities traded on the Swiss stock exchange. On May 29, 2000, Swissquote's shares were traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange , and the company was granted a banking license in the same year.

In 2001 Swissquote gained access to the Swiss stock exchange (then SWX and Virt-X) as well as to the US NYSE , NASDAQ and AMEX. After the takeover of Consors (Switzerland) AG in 2002, followed by the takeover of the customers of Skandia Bank Switzerland, further markets, financial products and services complemented its offer.

In 2009, Swissquote created a chair in quantitative finance at EPFL in Lausanne and launched its first Quant fund. In 2010, Swissquote made two acquisitions in the area of online trading: In June the company took over the Zurich-based company Tradejet AG, an online information platform and broker, and in October ACM Advanced Currency Markets AG. The latter acquisition meant that the company's trading business would then also include online forex trading.

In September 2013, Swissquote secured a place on the international market through the takeover and merger with MIG Bank, a company specializing in foreign exchange.

In the following years, Swissquote expanded its range to include other important services: online mortgages in cooperation with BLKB, Swiss DOTS, the trading platform for derivative products in cooperation with UBS, Goldman Sachs, Commerzbank, Vontobel and Deutsche Bank, and a partnership with PostFinance im Year 2014.

In January 2015, following the decision by the Swiss National Bank to stop the minimum exchange rate of CHF 1.20 per euro , Swissquote set up a reserve of CHF 25 million without, however, affecting the profitability or solidity of the bank. In addition, Swissquote and Manchester United announced a global multi-year partnership agreement.

In 2016, Swissquote launched a financial news app for Apple TV. In addition, Swissquote developed the financial game Swissquote GO, inspired by Pokémon GO.

In 2017, Swissquote reached another milestone by being the first bank to offer five cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, Litecoin and Ripple) and to enable all customers to trade with them.

In order to secure unrestricted access to the European markets, Swissquote bought the Luxembourg-based Internaxx Bank SA with around 12,000 customers and customer assets of 2 billion euros in August 2018. In the same year, another innovation was launched: a multicurrency credit card that can be used to pay in 12 different currencies with no conversion fees.

Since October 2018, customers have had the opportunity to take part in Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and to buy tokens for Swiss francs directly from their Swissquote account and keep them with Swissquote.
