Jacques Lüthy (born July 11, 1959 in Charmey ) is a former Swiss ski racer . With eight podium places and an Olympic bronze medal, he was one of the world's most successful alpine skiers in the giant slalom and slalom disciplines in the late 1970s and early 1980s .

biography

On December 9, 1978, Lüthy took part in a World Cup race for the first time, finishing tenth in the giant slalom in Schladming . A little more than a month later, on January 16, 1979, the first podium followed when he finished third in the giant slalom at Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden . With further good placements he was able to establish himself among the world's best.

Lüthy had his most successful season in 1979/80. With a total of four podium places, he reached third place in the giant slalom discipline, behind Ingemar Stenmark and Hans Enn ; but it was never enough to win. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he was able to celebrate the greatest success of his career by winning the slalom bronze medal (this race was also counted as a world championship).

In the following years Lüthy classified himself in the points several times, but he could only achieve further podium places in 1983. In the spring of 1985 he contested his last World Cup races. In 1986 he took part again in the Swiss championships, won the slalom and then resigned for good. Today he runs a sports shop in his birthplace, Charmey.
