The Staufner Berg or Staufen (as local residents call it) is a 1042 meter high mountain in the western Oberallgäu district . It towers over the town of Oberstaufen and gave it its name.

Surname

The original term Stuffen is of Celtic origin and referred to a drinking vessel that, as there was no base, was turned upside down when empty. Conical, radially symmetrical and free-standing elevations were often described with such a device in southern German, especially in the Alemannic language area, and given the mountain name Staufen . The Staufner Berg actually has a conspicuously conical shape, which most likely was used by historical users of the Salt Road for directions.

Derived from this name for the mountain, the resulting place at its foot was also called Staufen . In the 19th century this name became Oberstaufen to distinguish it from other places . The mountain is still called Staufen among the locals , only in official usage it is called Staufner Berg .

geology

Despite its isolated location, the Staufner Berg fits geologically into the surrounding structures. Its Nagelfluh rock , as well as its orientation and stratification, correspond to the adjacent mountain ranges of the Salmaser Höhe in the east and the Kapfs in the west. Also on the Staufen one recognizes the layer system typical of the Allgäu foothills of the Alps, rising towards the north, consisting of alternating slabs hardened by lime deposits and loose gravel banks lying in between .

The reason for the even shape of the mountain lies in its location between two glacier tongues in the last ice age . During the Würm, the foothills of the Iller Glacier, on the one hand, which then drained to the west, and, on the other hand, the Rhine Glacier, for the most part flowed around the mountain and cut the sides to its symmetrical shape.

A special feature is a sulfur spring at the eastern foot of the mountain, which was used for a spa.

geography

The Staufner Berg is strikingly free-standing in an area that is characterized by a large number of mountain and hill ranges. From its slopes you not only have an impressive view of the nearby town of Oberstaufen and, across Oberstaufen, the nearby Westallgäu, but also the Konstanz and the lower Weißach valleys, each 15 km in length. In the south the view is limited by the ridges of the Prodel and the Imberg near Steibis and finally by the rear Nagelfluhkette of the high ridge . In front of the Prodelkamm, the well-developed Hündlekopf rises as a direct geographical counterpart to Staufen. The ridge line between these antagonists marks the European main watershed between the Mediterranean and the North Sea, which continues over the summit of the Staufen to the Kalzhofner Höhe and then to its neighboring chain in an easterly direction, the Salmaser ridge .

Economical meaning

The Oberstaufen railway tunnel through the southern ridge of the Staufen.
  • The summit of the Staufen was never built on by a large fortification, despite its advantageous viewing position. A decisive reason was the lack of water supply due to the freedom of the mountain.
  • For the same reason, alpine farms only exist in relatively low locations in the west and east.
  • The Staufen has the greatest productive importance due to its almost continuous forest. For the purpose of logging, a farm road was built around the turn of the millennium that could also be used with heavy trucks. In addition, wood transport cable cars are temporarily operated on the slopes facing away from the village.
  • A thermal power station on the east foot supplies more than half of the households in Oberstaufen with district heating. It is largely operated with biomass and is an important recycler of waste from logging.
  • A widely visible transmitter mast on the summit and a smaller one on the eastern slope use the exposed location of Staufen for various communication purposes and for a panorama camera .
  • The southern ridge is tunnelled by the only railway tunnel in southern Bavaria. Since it previously limited the size and speed of trains passing through on the Munich-Lindau route , it was expanded between April and November 2016 and its portals lengthened to protect against falling rocks, so that it is now 160.1 m long.
  • The Oberstaufen cemetery is located at the lower end of the western slope.
  • A supraregional trading company also has its headquarters on the western slope facing the town.
  • In the immediate vicinity of a tourist resort, the Staufen inevitably has a tourist significance.

Sport and tourism

The immediate local mountain of a tourist destination like Oberstaufen is automatically the focus of tourists. Many newcomers want to go up the mountain to get an overview of their vacation spot. There are a number of well-kept paths available to such hikers. However, the route is seldom direct and difficult to see without a map. In addition, there is no catering on the whole mountain, also no water points.

Hiking routes

A selection of possible routes follows. Persistently dry weather is recommended for the loamy hiking trails; the gravel path can also be walked on shortly after it has rained.

  • Forest path over the Hirschsprung, approx. 1 hour to the summit
  • Ascent from the village over the alpine meadow, approx. 45 minutes
  • Gravel path over the farm road, approx. 1 hour from Oberstaufen

The Staufen is not recommended for sporty tours and regular training sessions due to frequent construction sites and exhaust emissions.

Winter sports

  • Historical
    • In the steepest part of the lower western slope, there was a ski jumping hill until the 1950s, among other things for hosting youth championships. The jump distances were up to 33 meters.

    • Up until the 1980s, there was brisk skiing activity on the western slope thanks to a drag lift .
