Steibis is a town in the district Aach im Allgäu market Oberstaufen in the Bavarian - Swabian Oberallgäu . It is located on a gently sloping plateau between the northern Weissach Valley and the Nagelfluhkette to the south at an altitude of 860 m. Local mountains are the Hochgrat and the Imberg, which is located directly in the village .

history

The first documented mention of the place name Steibis that can be found is in the list of people in the county of Rothenfels from 1451. There, "Elss Harrerin ze Stöbin and Kräugerin" are registered as proprietors of the county . In German, "ze Stöbin" means to the ("people named") Stöb. For Steibis there is no other evidence of the occurrence of the family name Stöb than that of 1451, which can point to Jäck Stöb.

Steibis was and still is the gateway to the largest contiguous former Sennalpen and today's Galtalpen area in Germany. The development of this alpine area for the summer grazing of dairy cattle and young cattle began as early as the 12th century.

Until the 19th century, Steibis was only a small mountain village in the municipality of Aach . Independent parish since 1857, the place had 239 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century. Then after the First World War it began to transform into a holiday and winter sports resort. In the 20th century it grew rapidly due to the emerging tourism, so that it got its own school, its own post office, its own rectory and its own public indoor swimming pool. In 1957 the road from Höfen in Weißach Valley up to Steibis was built. In 1967 it was recognized as a climatic health resort. The construction of the Imbergbahn in 1950 and the Hochgratbahn in 1973 were major milestones on the way to becoming one of the most important tourist destinations in the Allgäu. In 1971 the old church was demolished and a new, modern church was consecrated at the end of 1970. As part of the municipal reorganization of Bavaria in 1972 , Steibis and the municipality of Aach fell to the Oberstaufen market on January 1, 1972.
