rock Nagelfluh

The Seelekopf is a 1663  m high neighboring mountain of the high ridge in the Nagelfluh chain in the Allgäu Alps in Bavaria .

Location and surroundings

The Seelekopf stands together with the Hochgrat in the rear Nagelfluhkette in the area in which the front Nagelfluhkette between Prodel and Imbergkamm shows a deep gap due to the outflow of the Weißach . On the northern slope of the Seelekopf, above the Lower Lauchalpe, stands the Ureibe near Steibis , one of the oldest trees in Germany.

It is located in the Steibis area , the distance to the south-east is a little over four kilometers as the crow flies. The Seelekopf thus belongs to the municipality of Oberstaufen . The border with Austria runs about one kilometer to the west.

The notch height of the Seelekopf is at least 63 meters, its dominance 800 meters, with the Hochgrat being the reference mountain in each case.

history

Until the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972, the Seelekopf belonged together with the other mountains of the high ridge chain between Stuiben and Falken to the municipality of Aach / Steibis and was farmed by its alpine farmers.

etymology

The name Seelekopf comes from the Alpe Seele , which is located northwest below the mountain. It got its name from a lake that was probably located in the Karmulde south of the Alpe. The alpine pasture area of the Seelealpe was created by dividing the Große Lauchalpe. This gave its name to the first mention of the Seelekopf in Blasius Hueber's Vorarlberg map from 1783 as the Lauchalpner Grat . Until a good 100 years ago, this lake was 200 m in length. In our time the lake is completely silted up and only a large flat meadow with fertile grass is reminiscent of this "soul".

Mountain mass

Mountain mass at the summit cross

Since 1926 a Catholic mountain mass has been held every year on the last Sunday in August on the summit of the Seelekopf . The organizer is the Oberstaufen Kolping family . The memory goes to the fallen of the two world wars from the municipality of Oberstaufen.

Summit cross

A summit cross made of steel and attached decorative elements is available for the devotion of trade fair visitors and hikers . It is 7 m high, 3.5 m wide, weighs 440 kg and has replaced a wooden cross since August 13, 1986. As a child, the donor was a shepherd boy on one of the nearby alpine pastures.

Development

  • The hiking trail from the Hochgratbahn valley station over the Seelealpe to the summit takes around two and a half hours.
  • Via the normal route to the Hochgrat, which you leave on the ridge and continue to the west, you get to the summit in two hours, but a little more difficult over iron steps.
  • The bases are the Staufner Haus and the mountain station of the Hochgratbahn, from which the Seelekopf summit can be reached in 20-30 minutes via the steps.
