The Ureibe near Steibis is located southeast of Steibis , a district of the Oberstaufen market in the Oberallgäu district . The Ureibe is probably one of the oldest trees in Germany.

description

The Ureibe is a female specimen of the European yew (Taxus baccata) . It has a short, compact trunk with a circumference of around 5 meters, which is hollow in the middle. A large number of branches arise from this trunk, which form a very wide-spreading crown. The grater has a very vital need for its age and produces plenty of fruit every year.

Location

The Ureibe stands on the northern slope of the Seelekopf above the Lower Lauchalpe . It grows in an alpine meadow near the normal route to the Hochgrat and the Staufner Haus at an altitude of 1070  m above sea level. NN . The Ureibe grows on a nutrient-rich soil over calcareous Nagelfluh rock .

Age

Since the Ureibe has a hollow trunk, its age cannot be determined directly by a tree ring analysis using a drill chip. The location of the Ureibe at almost 1,100 meters results in a short vegetation period and a low annual mean temperature and thus a lower growth rate than that of trees in the lowlands. This is why the large trunk circumference of the Ureibe is all the more remarkable and in comparison with other yew trees, their age is estimated at 600 to 800 years. A sure sign of their old age is the hollow, heavily fissured trunk.
