Thaddäus Steiner (born May 25, 1933 in Oberstdorf ; † November 9, 2017 ) was a German German philologist and field name researcher.

Life

Thaddäus Steiner comes from a long-established Oberstdorf family. After attending the Oberstdorf high school at the time, he studied German, geography and history at the University of Munich . From 1958 to 1963 he worked in the school service in Füssen . From 1963 to 1966 he worked as an assistant at the German seminar at the University of Tübingen . In 1972 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich with a thesis on the field names of the municipality of Oberstdorf im Allgäu . One result of his dissertation was, among other things, the clarification of the correct naming of the Walser and Oberstdorfer Hammerspitze (previously called Hammerspitze and Schüsser). From 1966 to 1995 he was a teacher at the Bodenseegymnasium in Lindau .

Scientific work

The focus of his academic work was on researching the meaning of field names in his homeland Oberstdorf and the surrounding area ( Ostallgäu , Westallgäu , Bregenz Forest ). As part of his dissertation , he was the first to systematically examine the Oberstdorf dialect .

In his publication Allgäuer Bergnames , 451 articles explain all the names of the peaks of the Allgäu Alps, the Bavarian, Vorarlberg and Tyrolean regions as well as some prominent heights of the Alpine foothills.

Steiner had been a member of the Schwäbische Forschungsgemeinschaft eV since 1974, based at the University of Augsburg .

In 2010 Steiner was awarded the Pro Suebia Prize from the Dr. Eugen Liedl Foundation .

Steiner was no longer able to complete the order given by the Swabian Research Association in 2006 to develop a new version of the land register for the Augsburg bishopric from 1316; when he died, other members of the community took over the completion, which came out in 2019.
