The Buchenegger waterfalls of the Weißach lie between Steibis and Buchenegg , in the district of Aach im Allgäu of the municipality of Oberstaufen , on the border to the district of Oberstaufen, which is formed here by the right bank of the river. They belong to the Allgäu Geopark , which lies between Lake Constance and the Illertal . This summarizes the most beautiful geographic destinations in the Allgäu. Other geotopes in the Oberallgäu district are the Breitachklamm , the Eistobel , the Starzlachklamm and the Steigbachtobel .

The Buchenegger waterfalls are designated as a valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (Geotope number: 780R043).

Gump jumping

In Bavaria , especially in the Allgäu , the term " pool jumping " or "pool itching" has firmly established itself as a synonym for cliff jumping . This extreme sport is so popular there that Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcast a report about it: "We in Bavaria - Gumpenspringen at the Buchenegger waterfalls". The highest jump point is a good 30 meters above the water. Due to the fluctuating water level and the increasing gravel in the lower basin, jumps there are always associated with risks. Other popular jumping spots are the Ammerbruch (Scheibum) near Saulgrub and the Gumpen at Sylvensteinspeicher .

Accidents

On July 18, 2014, a 19-year-old American student was killed in the falls.

On August 17, 2016, a 17-year-old refugee and a 31-year-old carer who tried to save him died from drowning.
