The Nagelfluhkette nature park is a cross-border nature park in the Nagelfluhkette in the Allgäu Alps , between the German region of Allgäu and the state of Vorarlberg . The nature park is the first cross-border nature park between Germany and Austria .

Location and landscape

Topography of the natural park
The Great Alpsee near Immenstadt

The nature park covers a large part of the Allgäu pre-Alps . It stretches from Immenstadt and the western slopes of the Illertal in the east, the Alpsee area , Konstanzer Ach and Oberstaufen in the north to the Hirschbergzug (already near the Bregenz Pfänder ) in the west, and in the south to the Bregenz Ach , Hirschgundtal and Rohrmoostal near Oberstdorf , to to the slopes of the Hochifen . Its core area is the eponymous Nagelfluh chain with Hochhäderichzug , in the north lies the Prodel , in the south the Hörnergruppe (Riedberghorngruppe).

The park stretches from the valley of the Iller and Bregenzerach to the summit of the high ridge at 1834  m ( culminating in the southern tip of the municipality of Sibratsgälle at 2050  m ). The area has a height difference of 1400 m in a very small space. That is one of the reasons why the landscape is so varied.

Size and communities

The nature park covers 24,700 hectares in the Oberallgäu district and 16,300 hectares in the adjacent Bregenzerwald , a total of around 410 square kilometers . Six municipalities in Oberallgäu and eight municipalities in Vorarlberg joined forces for this project.

Mission statement and goals

The main goals of this project are:

  • Protection, care and development of nature and the landscape
  • Sustainable agriculture, alpine and forestry as a key contribution to the preservation of the cultural landscape
  • Sustainable, high quality tourism and its marketing
  • Sustainable regional development with the core topic of energy

implementation

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park is the first cross-border nature park between Germany and Austria and thus represents an international pilot project.

The idea for the nature park arose in 2003 as part of the Interreg IIIB project DYNALP of the network of municipalities in the Alps , in which “the safeguarding of mountain agriculture through the development of sustainable tourism offers ” was discussed. The creation of the nature park was intensively supported by the European Union within the framework of the INTERREG IIIA / IV Alpenrhein – Bodensee – Hochrhein program, and the funds were approved in 2005. From 2006 to 2007, the Austrian Ecology Institute and the German Alpine Research Institute helped create the legal and organizational requirements and take the first steps.

The nature park was approved by the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment on January 1st, 2008, and registered with the number NP-00018 or BAY-18 on an area of 24,659.36 ha . The primary goals are the protection, maintenance and development of nature and the landscape. This also makes it Bavaria's first nature park in the Alpine region : the nature park is a relatively weak protection instrument that primarily serves to combine nature conservation and local tourism, and is primarily used in the Bavarian Forest , not in the well-developed Alpine region.

In Vorarlberg - unlike in the other federal states - the nature park is not a legal protected area category ( the biosphere park is anchored in Vorarlberg nature conservation law on the basis of UNESCO designation). This is a voluntary commitment by the nature park communities. This is why the park is not a member of the Association of Austrian Nature Parks  (VNÖ) (as of 5/2011 ). However, as part of the reorientation of Vorarlberg nature conservation towards integral nature and landscape protection and also the promotion of the communal basis of the matter, the initiative is supported by the responsible authorities and state politics as a regional strategy for regional development, such as the biosphere reserve Großes Walsertal , which is also locally built . Because the communities are involved in the nature park with their entire area, the designated protected area is 15,404.54 hectares. The protection intention is more in sustainable forestry and agriculture than in tourism.

In order to pursue the biosphere concept as a whole, the fundamentals are to be developed in order to come as close as possible to regional energy self-sufficiency by 2015 . This project is funded within the framework of DYNALP² / Alpine Alliance. The Bregenzerwald has been a center of modern Alpine architecture since the 1980s , which has integrated regionality, energy-efficient construction and an awareness of the landscape since the beginning .

Natural resources and development

Protected areas in the nature park

The following protected areas are located in the nature park:

In the south, the protected areas of the Hoher Ifen group border directly (nature reserve Hoher Ifen , FFH area Hoher Ifen or SPA / bird sanctuary Hoher Ifen and Piesenkopf in Germany, plant protection area Hochifen and Gottesacker plateau in Austria).

Alpinism

Hikes on the ridge path of the chain are among the most popular in the Oberallgäu district because of the view . On the Austrian side, the low foothills are considered an “alpine insider tip” in view of the more prominent areas in the south.
