The Hohe Ifen (also Hochifen ) is 2230  m above sea level. A. or 2229  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Allgäu Alps , west of the Kleinwalsertal . In winter it forms the backdrop for a small ski area. It lies on the border between Germany and Austria . The summit represents the highest point of the slightly inclined Ifen plateau. The municipal boundaries of Egg , Mittelberg (both Vorarlberg ) and Oberstdorf ( Swabia ) meet here.

Northeast of Ifenplateaus is the Gottesackerplateau , one with nature standing karst landscape with numerous caves and rare alpine plants. The most important caves are the Hölloch in Mahdtal and the Schneckenlochhöhle near Schönenbach . On the eastern slope of the Bergstock, a Stone Age dwelling was discovered in 1998 by amateur archaeologist Detlef Willand on the Schneiderkürenalpe at an altitude of about 1500  m and uncovered with professional support from the University of Innsbruck .

natural reserve

On the south side of the mountain there is a wilderness area, the establishment of which has been heavily criticized by mountaineering associations such as IG Climbing Allgäu, as it also includes previously popular sport climbing areas. Despite a later relaxation of the climbing ban, the criticism continues. The wilderness area must also be taken into account when planning ski tours.

Ski Area

At the beginning of the 1970s, the first ski lifts were built on the Ifen, from which today's Ifen-Bergbahn-Gesellschaft emerged. For a long time it was majority owned by Ruth Merckle , the wife of the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Adolf Merckle . By taking over the 82% share of the Merckle family and the 18% share of the family of the Kleinwalsertal tourism pioneer Alfons Herz, Ifen Bergbahn GmbH u. Co since July 1, 2009 entirely of the Kleinwalsertaler Bergbahn (KBB), Riezlern, whose main shareholders are the Allgäuer Überlandwerk and the Raiffeisen Holding Kleinwalsertal .

history

In 1961 the Olympic lift was built as a drag lift / hotel lift. In 1971/1972 the Ifenhütte double chairlift followed between Auenhütte and Ifenhütte and the Ifen drag lift , which continued uphill from the Ifenhütte. The Gaisbühl pommel lift / practice lift has existed since 1976, making a practice area accessible. The detachable Hahnenköpflebahn double chairlift , the valley station of which was northeast of the Ifenhütte, was built in 1978. The two double chairlifts were modernized in 1991/1992.

10-seater Ifen gondola

The Ifenlift had in 2016 the detachable 6-seater chairlift Olympic track soft, which led from the valley up to the middle of the drag lift. In the 2017 summer season, the two chairlifts were dismantled, which meant that no lift transport of people to the Ifenhütte was possible. For the 2017/2018 winter season, the Ifen 10-seater gondola lift (D-Line system from Doppelmayr ) replaced the old Ifen lift and Hahnenköpfle lift in two sections .

Slopes

Skiers have around 22 kilometers of pistes of all levels of difficulty at their disposal, with the proportion of black-marked pistes being high compared to the neighboring ski areas. Because of the length and the small number of lifts, the runs are also longer than average.

Access

The valley station of the Ifenbahn is the entrance to the ski area. This can be reached from Hirschegg via a road leading through the Schwarzwassertal. There is also a regular bus service on this street; There is also a bus connection between the valley station and the neighboring Heuberg Arena .

Panorama train to the Walmendinger Horn

A connection railway planned at the beginning of the 2010s via the Schwarzwassertal to the Walmendinger Horn was sharply criticized by various associations as being environmentally damaging and promoting mass tourism .

The Kleinwalsertaler Bergbahn AG opposed that this infrastructure measure would help to stop the tourist downward trend in the region, as the new lift would create a coherent ski area. The majority of the Mittelberg community representatives spoke out in favor of building the railway, for which around 1,600 signatures were collected and given to the mayor. Since the opponents of the project were also able to collect more than 1,200 support signatures, a referendum finally took place on October 21, 2012. With a turnout of 74.4%, 55% of those entitled to vote spoke out against the construction of the planned panorama railway and thus prevented the implementation of the plans.
