The trained physiotherapist and mother of four children, together with her husband Adolf Merckle, pushed ahead with the further development of the Merckle and ratiopharm companies after he took over the Merckle company in 1967. From 1974 to 2002 she was managing director. She was responsible for corporate culture, architecture and social issues. The compatibility of work and family and the associated family-friendly part-time and home-based jobs were important to her, as was taking care of the employees' children during the holidays and establishing a company kindergarten. Merckle introduced the position of a women's representative, who initially dealt with the issues of the female employees, and later in the “meeting point people” of the issues of all employees. Apprentices were able to gain a week of team experience during a stay in the monastery of Volkenroda in Thuringia or at the Christian Youth Village Association of Germany (CJD) and learn independence and operational processes in a “junior company”. Merckle also set up an arts officer so employees could choose their art in the workplace. Mountaineering was her hobby. The Merckle couple went on trekking tours in the Himalayas , led by Everest climber Siegfried Hupfauer . Together with Hupfauer, Ruth Merckle was the official first climber of a mountain in Bhutan in 1983 . The 5,250 meter high mountain was then named after Merckle Ruth: Meru Kang II.
