The Allgäu Überlandwerk ( AÜW ) is a regional German utility companies whose coverage area on the southern Schwaben (in particular, most of the Allgäu ), as well as the investment in energy supply Kleinwalsertal in the adjacent Austrian Kleinwalsertal extends. The company's headquarters are in Kempten . The AÜW is the largest regional electricity provider in the Allgäu with around 94,000 private and business customers. In 2009 the AÜW sold 1,055 million kWh of electricity. Most of the electricity is bought on the European exchanges; physically, most of the energy comes into the network area via adjacent upstream network operators using lines. In 2009, the AÜW generated around 73 million kilowatt hours from renewable energies in its own run-of-river power plants without external procurement .
history
The company was founded on January 1, 1920. The founding shareholders were Karl Böhm (also the first managing director) and the city of Kempten, represented by Mayor Otto Merkt . On June 11, 1929, the city of Kempten brought its electricity company into the company, and on January 1, 1938, the city gas works. When the demand for energy continued to rise rapidly in the years after the Second World War, the Allgäu overland plant took up earlier considerations for the construction of a Rottach dam and planned a reservoir about 100 hectares in size for a peak load power plant . Resistance arose from affected property owners and the neighboring communities of Moosbach and Petersthal , and a protection association for those affected was founded. Despite the somewhat uncoordinated resistance, the AÜW oriented itself differently and gave up the reservoir project (it was taken up again by the Free State of Bavaria in the 1970s and completed by 1992). In 1970 the Wertach power station, which had existed since 1920, was taken over, which had built the power station at Grüntensee in 1960 and put it into operation in 1961.
