Thomas Kiechle (* 1967 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German politician ( CSU ) and has been Lord Mayor of the city of Kempten (Allgäu) since May 1, 2014 .

Life

"School career

Thomas Kiechle was born in Kempten in 1967 as one of four children. His parents are the former Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forests Ignaz Kiechle ( Kohl II , III , IV cabinets ) and Cäcilia Kiechle, née Räth.

From 1977 to 1987 Kiechle attended the Carl-von-Linde-Gymnasium Kempten and passed the Abitur there in 1987. From 1988 to 1989 he did his military service with the Mountain Medical Battalion 8 in the Prinz-Franz-Kaserne in Kempten. He then studied to become a secondary school teacher at the University of Augsburg until 1992 . In 1993 he was doing his legal clerkship and since then has been a teacher at the middle school at Hofmühle in Kempten.

In 1992 Kiechle married his wife Ulrike, with whom he has three daughters. In the same year he passed his first state examination and in 1995 his second state examination.

Political career

From 2008 to March 2014, Kiechle was a CSU city councilor in Kempten. He held positions in the planning and construction committee, school and culture committee, committee for social issues and in the sports committee.

On July 1, 2013, the CSU and the Free Voters presented Kiechle as a joint candidate for the office of Lord Mayor. In the local elections on March 16, 2014, he sat down with 51.09 percent and the support of free voters against Martin Bernhard (23.3%, SPD), Thomas Hartmann (11.75%, Greens), Ulrich Kremser (7, 67%, FDP), Michael Hofer (4.74%, ÖDP), Michael Ulmer (1.72%, REP) and thus became the successor to the previous mayor and party colleague Ulrich Netzer . Traditionally, Lord Mayors Kemptens are also the chairman of the board of directors of Sparkasse Allgäu, which also applies to Kiechle.

The term of office of Thomas Kiechle is marked by various changes in the city. Due to a lack of suitable commercial space, existing companies from Kempten repeatedly settled in other communities. The controversial increase in parking fees and the introduction of fees on previously free parking spaces in 2017 also occurred as changes in Kiechle's tenure. The last increase in parking fees took place around ten years ago. The further development of the museum landscape is also being promoted, in particular the planned city museum in the Zumsteinhaus , which previously housed the natural history and Roman museum. There was repeated hopelessness at the Großer Loch , as the city of Kempten had advanced several million euros here to complete the underground car park. In addition, the city must enable construction site protection, which costs around 10,000 euros a month. For a long time it was unclear how the city would get the money back. At the end of April 2017, Thomas Kiechle reached an agreement with the creditors of the construction site as the most successful act to date on the construction project , so the unfinished property can finally be sold by the insolvency administrator and the city's open items can be settled again. A short time later, the "Filetgrundstück" appeared on online real estate portals. Due to the increase in parking fees and the simultaneous creation of new offers in local public transport ( Mona Allgäu ), the number of passengers in the city buses rose significantly.

In the local elections in Bavaria in 2020 , Kiechle was re-elected with 54.32%. In 2020 he also stood as a joint candidate for CSU / Free Voters.

criticism

In 2017 it became known that the Sparkasse Allgäu had helped around 900 customers to evade tax over several years (2004–2015). The Sparkasse hid money (especially inheritances) in an Austrian branch from German tax offices. From 2014, Kiechle was the successor to Ulrich Netzer - Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sparkasse and thus had control and steering functions. It is not known whether criminal investigations were carried out against Kiechle.

Functions

Until he took office as Lord Mayor, Kiechle was chairman of the CSU local association Kempten / Lenzfried - Leubas and deputy chairman of the CSU district association Kempten. Furthermore, Kiechle is a member of the Lenzfried Music Association and chairman of the Lenzfried Parish Association.
