The Nordspange is an east-west connection with the crossing of the Iller in the north of the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) . The total cost of the project was around 13.1 million euros. The construction project has been the next largest road construction project in the city's history since the completion of the Middle Ring . The opening took place on November 6, 2015.

The main goal is an efficient connection of the industrial areas on both banks of the Iller as well as relieving the inner city of individual traffic. This means that the A 7 can also be better reached from the western bank of the Iller.

The bridge structure is called Riederau Bridge because of its proximity to Riederau . Furthermore, parts of the street in the north spine are called Thomas-Dachser-Straße and Johann-Abt-Straße .

construction

planning phase

The north clasp is intended to connect Kaufbeurer Strasse in the east with Memminger Strasse in the west. This creates a cross connection in the north of Kempten as well as relieving the Adenauerring, Kaufbeurer Straße and the junction Berliner Platz. In the further course the Kaufbeurer Straße is to be extended by another lane towards the city center in order to create greater capacities during peak times.

The north spine is planned with a roadway width of 7.5 meters. The connecting road runs in the valley area of the Iller on an embankment up to 4 meters high. Various measures must be taken for the construction to protect species, landscape and water. Among other things, the Ursulasrieder Bach was relocated and an artificial floodplain was created.

Construction progress

At the groundbreaking ceremony on May 14, 2012, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann had an accident with a Liebherr R 944 crawler excavator weighing approx. 38 tons that he wanted to operate for the dig. The excavator fell over, with the interior minister in the control cabin being slightly injured. This generated international press coverage, among other things, the digging of the spade with the excavator was criticized as unparalleled and dangerous. The groundbreaking ceremony was accompanied by a demonstration against the construction of the north clasp. The demonstrators argued that the project was unnecessary, the cost, and the damage to natural spaces.

Slightly damaged but intact grenades were found in the compensation areas in May 2012 and had to be blown up on site. There was a military training area nearby, which had included a secondary army ammunition facility since 1938.

On June 8, 2012, an American aerial bomb weighing around 125 kilograms was discovered and defused on June 13. For this purpose, an area with a diameter of 400 meters was cordoned off and evacuated.

opening

The bridge was opened on November 6, 2015 in the presence of the still incumbent Minister of the Interior Herrmann. In addition to Herrmann, two clergymen and Lord Mayor Thomas Kiechle gave speeches . This indicated that the 2012 estimated costs of 13 million euros had been met. On this occasion, Herrmann defended his party's view of the refugee crisis and deportations in his speech .

The opening was accompanied by a car parade of neighboring companies ( Abt Sportsline , Dachser ) and clubs, a party in a commercial enterprise and music by alphorn players and the town band. After the opening, the important officials were transported in cars from the company Abt. Stefan Albanesi ( Die Linke ) made a silent protest with a poster regarding the, in his opinion, poorly cleared up coke affair in the Allgäu by the Bavarian judiciary.

Problems

The area with a total area of 24 hectares is located in the Iller landscape protection area . There are, as the only place in Kempten, blue ants represented on the slopes of the Iller. To compensate for soil compaction and the removal of the natural space, an amphibian tunnel was created and gravel banks laid in the Iller. Lowering the foreland should serve as flood protection, but also provide space for vegetation and animals.

The cost increase of the road project is also a point of criticism of the opponents: In 2007 7.2 million euros were estimated for the road connection, in 2012 it was now estimated at 13.1 million euros. The city administration justified this with the fact that the project had constantly developed and there was disagreement on some sub-projects, especially with regard to the compensation areas for the Iller.
