The Prinz-Franz-Kaserne in Kempten (Allgäu) was built in 1936 during the armament of the Wehrmacht . From August 1, 1956 to 1992, it was used by the Bundeswehr .

History of the barracks

The barracks , named after Prince Franz of Bavaria , was located in the center of the city on a 5.4 hectare site near the St. Lorenz Basilica , the Prince Abbey of Kempten , the orangery and the court garden . The newly formed 1st Battalion of the 91st Infantry Regiment moved into the barracks as the first unit in 1937 . Within the battalion a cavalcade which 13 were mortars - Company and the 14th Anti-Tank Company set up. The battalion participated in the Anschluss of Austria on March 12, 1938 and the subsequent de facto annexation by the National Socialist German Reich . The Infantry Replacement Battalion 91 was set up for the battalion at the end of 1938, which then moved into the barracks.

On August 1, 1956, the establishment and stationing of the Airborne Fighter Battalion 19 of the Army of the German Armed Forces at the Prinz-Franz-Kaserne location in Kempten began. On December 5, 1956, 300 volunteers were sworn in . On February 27, 1957, another 178 men were added. On April 1, 1957, the first conscripts entered to do their basic military service , in the same month the battalion reached its target strength of 900 men. On June 3, 1957, the Iller accident occurred , in which 15 soldiers of the battalion died.

conversion

In 1992 the barracks were closed. The entire area became part of a conversion program of 8.2 million euros from the Bavarian state . In the meantime, 400 civilian jobs - mostly in the public sector - have been created in the parts of the barracks building. The following government agencies are now based on the area:
