Monuments and sights

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul

Petersthal has a parish church that is worth seeing and is dedicated to the apostles Saint Peter and Paul . Some of them are among the most beautiful village churches in the Allgäu. First of all, it stands out for its stately onion dome, which was built in 1755 according to plans by the architect and builder Franz Karl Fischer from Füssen. At that time it was 43 meters high, today it is ten meters lower because it was no longer built at its original height after a fire in 1792.

The nave was also rebuilt around 1755 according to plans by Franz Karl Fischer, who once again demonstrated his sense of fine proportions here. Today the building is essentially Baroque , the furnishings with altars, frescoes and stucco are in a splendid Rococo style. The ceiling frescoes of the nave, which are dedicated to the patrons of the church, were created by Franz Anton Weiß , who came from a famous Rettenberg family of painters .

The mighty high altar with its white and gold framed figures and its altar leaf, which contains an allegorical representation of the church in the form of the Ecclesia, is remarkable at the Petersthaler church . Numerous other depictions of the Apolsteln, the life of Mary, saints and angels can be found. A Romanesque palm donkey from the beginning of the 14th century is one of the oldest representations of this kind and is evidence of old rural wood carving.

Plague cemetery

The plague cemetery, located a little off the former connection road to Moosbach, is a simple, four-walled area with a memorial in the middle that commemorates the victims of the last great plague deaths in Petersthal and Moosbach in the summer of 1635.

"Tobelweg" and the sparse remains of Kranzegg Castle

Not too much is known about the builders of the castle, the Knights of Kranzegg. Mention is the castle in 1339. Many visitors find it attractive, over a path on the edge of Peter Brook to this medieval scene in a ravine penetrate the hamlet Burgkranzegg west.

Horn and Ellegghöhe

From the 1150 meter high Burgkranzegger Horn, which is also called Petersthaler Hörnle or Horn, and even better from the nearby Ellegghöhe, which is somewhat lower at 1136 meters but has fewer trees in the summit area, you have a comprehensive view of Petersthal and the valley of the Rottach.
