Franz Karl Fischer (born November 4, 1710 in Füssen , † August 5, 1772 in Füssen) was, like his father Johann Georg Fischer , a stonemason and master builder at the same time. At first he was undoubtedly overshadowed by his older father, in whose service he mainly worked as a stonemason for St. Mang in Füssen for a long time. Only after the death of Johann Georg Fischer († April 24, 1747) was Franz Karl able to make a name for himself as a master builder. His church buildings are in the tradition of the "Füssen School" founded by Johann Jakob Herkomer . Franz Karl Fischer did not become a rococo master builder according to Bernhard Rupprecht's strict criteria.

Life

Franz Karl Fischer was born as the son of the builder Johann Georg Fischer and his wife Euphrosina. Of his seven siblings, only two reached adulthood. Although there is no written confirmation for this, it can be assumed that Franz Karl received his training as a stonemason and master builder from his father. Only after his death did he go into business for himself, married the butcher's daughter Katharina Mayr from Füssen on August 8, 1747 and set up his own household. On February 9, 1756, after his first wife had died, he made the second marriage with Maria Veronica Hauser from Oberpinswang . The stages of his professional emancipation can be well documented by entries in various account books:

  • September 5, 1745: eodem pay Franz Carl Fischer, Steinhauer for the erection of the 14th Helper Altar over received Gibs 5  fl. 59 kr.
  • January 9, 1751: Master builder Franz Carl [Fischer] to 2000 fl.
  • December 11, 1755: Hochfürstl. Augsb. Landt Baumaister in Füessen [signature]

As a stonemason, Franz Karl Fischer left behind at least two highly significant works: the high altar of the parish church and basilica Mariae Conception in Innsbruck- Wilten (he received 1,500 guilders for the tabernacle alone!) And most likely also the former high altar for the Eichstätter cathedral (since 1883 in the parish church of Deggendorf ). Fischer's activity as a builder has not yet been adequately researched. The hospital church in Füssen is considered to be his best architectural achievement. Although it has its model in the Franciscan convent church in Dillingen an der Donau - a work by his father - it is not simply a copy, but rather represents a visible and tangible further development. The rectory in Füssen-Weißensee, which was converted by Franz Karl Fischer, was next to Goethe's Garden house in Weimar to the architectural model of the heritage protection architecture.

Johann Georg Fischer and his son Franz Karl provide their entire property as a deposit for the good execution of the Eichstatt choir altar. Because of the illness and the death of his father soon afterwards, only Franz Karl is eligible for the execution.
