Johann Jakob Herkomer , also Johann Jakob Herkommer , (born July 3, 1652 in Sameister near Roßhaupten ; † October 27, 1717 in St. Mang Monastery, Füssen ) was a German builder, painter, sculptor, fresco painter and plasterer of the Baroque .

Life

Herkomer grew up with six siblings in Sameister, where his parents ran a post office with an inn.

Little is known about his school and apprenticeship days; there are indications that he was apprenticed to the Augsburg painter Johann Georg Knappich (1637–1704). Herkomer then traveled to Italy and worked for the patrician family Collalto in Belluno and Venice for a few years . Returning from Italy in 1685, he began building a chapel next to his parents' inn, which was to serve as a family burial site and where he could demonstrate his skills as an architect, fresco painter and plasterer. Herkomer then received a large number of orders from the local area. Herkomer spent the years 1694 to 1697 in Italy.

Herkomer died in 1717 before the completion of the church of St. Mang in the monastery and was buried in Sameister in "his" chapel.

Herkomer trained well-known baroque master builders such as Johann Georg Fischer , who was his nephew, and probably Dominikus Zimmermann as well .

In addition to his chapel , the monastery and the church of St. Mang in Füssen are considered to be the main works of Johann Jakob Herkomer. Other important work was the renovation of the St. Moritz Church and the Baroque transformation of the Holy Cross Church in Augsburg. In 1716 he built the monastery church of the Fultenbach monastery (demolished in 1811).

A job that he could no longer carry out himself was the construction of the parish church of St. Jakob zu Innsbruck. He was also no longer able to complete the new construction of the St. Nikolaus Church in Füssen himself. His nephew Johann Georg Fischer completed the building in 1718 according to his plans.
