The Fultenbach Abbey was a Benedictine abbey in Holzheim in Bavaria in the diocese of Augsburg .

history

The monastery, consecrated to St. Michael, was founded in 739 by Bishop Wigbert von Augsburg. It was destroyed during the Hungarian invasion of 955 and then re-founded, probably in the first half of the 12th century. In any case, the monastery is mentioned in a document in 1162 as Vultenbhach . In 1130 the Augsburg Bishop Hermann certified the renewal of the foundation by the Augsburg Canon Gebino. He called Benedictine monks from the Abbey of St. Blasien , placed himself at the head of the abbey and made a rich donation. Pope Viktor IV liberated the abbey from episcopal rule in 1162. In the 13th century, the bailiwick was owned by the Lords of Burgau , who, however, wanted to illegally enrich themselves on the monastery property . King Adolf therefore commissioned the Count of Öttingen to protect the monastery. In 1346 the Augsburg bishopric was able to enforce sovereignty over Fultenbach by acquiring the umbrella bailiff from Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian . After the death of Abbot Ulrich Frey, the monastery moved in in 1449, but restored it in 1471. The sovereignty over Fultenbach was always disputed between the bishopric of Augsburg and the margraviate of Burgau . In 1557, for example, the margraviate granted the Augsburg bishop the right to protection and protection over the monastery only on condition that the “sovereign authorities” were not affected. As a result of over-indebtedness, Fultenbach came under the administration of the Neresheim monastery and in 1777 under the Ottobeuren monastery . In 1794 a priory was established in Fultenbach, which was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . In 1811 the monastery (built 1683-1700) and church (built 1716-1733) were demolished. The monastery library was transferred to the library of the Lyceum in Dillingen .
