Saint Wikterp in the St. Lorenz Chapel in Epfach

Wikterp (also Wigbert and Wiggo ; † around 772 in Epfach ) was the first bishop of Augsburg who historians could secure historically. He is mentioned for the first time in a letter from Gregory III. to the German bishops. Presumably he was born in Epfach in the first half of the 8th century.

Wikterp is said to have played an important role in spreading and strengthening the Christian faith in the Allgäu . He is also considered a co-founder of the monasteries Fultenbach , Kempten , Wessobrunn and Ellwangen and consecrated the churches in Füssen and the Marienmünster in Kempten.

Wikterp allegedly died on April 18, 771 in Augsburg , although none of these claims can really be confirmed. It is known that he was buried in Epfach . His bones were transferred to Augsburg in 989. There they were first buried in the Afra Church and in 1489 reburied in the St. Ulrich and Afra basilica .
