Degenhard von Hellenstein (* 13th century; † 1307 ) was bishop of Augsburg from 1303 until his death (late November / early December 1307 ) .

origin

Degenhard was the son of the noble Degenhard von Gundelfingen-Hellenstein and his wife Agnes, daughter of Count Hartmann IV. Von Dillingen. The eponymous family castle was above Heidenheim in Württemberg. Through his mother, he was also the nephew of Count Hartmann von Dillingen , who was Bishop of Augsburg from 1248 to 1286.

Career

During the Augsburg pontificate of his uncle, Bishop Hartmann, Degenhard was accepted into the Augsburg cathedral chapter (earliest evidence of his membership: April 26, 1277). In addition to the cathedral canon, he held the office of archdeacon (occupied between 1283 and 1289) and provost of the Augsburg collegiate church of St. Moritz (1285–1303). Within the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter he became the latest in the last year of his episcopal election as provost . His election as Bishop of Augsburg to succeed the late Wolfhard von Roth took place at the end of April / beginning of May 1303.

Degenhard led the diocese of Augsburg relatively conflict-free by respecting the historically grown interests of the various institutions and groups. With gifts of goods or the transfer of rights, he promoted a. the Deutschordenskommende Donauwörth , the Cistercian monastery of Stams and the Augsburg cathedral chapter. In disputes between diocese members, he was successful as an arbitrator. As an imperial prince, he did not appear clearly.
