history

The name comes either from its appearance, which is shimmering white due to the deposited lime, or can be explained by the fact that an Alemannic named Wizo settled here around 600 AD .

Weißensee was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century by the "Lords of Wicense".

In 753, the Frankish King Pippin bequeathed the lake and its surrounding area to Bishop Wikterp of Augsburg in favor of the newly created St. Mang monastery cell . After many changes, the city of Füssen finally acquired the lake with fishing rights from private hands in 1928.

Weißensee has a parish church and two branch churches .

The parish church of St. Walburga stands in the actual district of Weißensee directly above the lake and is surrounded by a cemetery . Its origins go back to the 12th century. The Romanesque lower part of the tower still dates from this time. The church was last redesigned in the baroque period. Its special decoration is the choir altar made in 1715 by Dominikus Zimmermann , who later built the Wieskirche .

The St. Nikolaus branch church in Oberkirch is somewhat hidden above the western bank of the Weißensee, it is a gem of Allgäu art. The vaulted choir still shows all the characteristics of the 14th century Gothic. The tower and nave were redesigned in early Baroque style in 1617 and after the Thirty Years War they were uniformly furnished with frescoes , altars and pulpit by masters from Weilheim , Füssen and Vils . There, alternating with the chapel in Wies, a Holy Mass takes place every Tuesday.

Another small chapel is in the Wies district. It was built in the 17th century and was dedicated to Saint Joseph . There is a Holy Mass every Tuesday alternating with the chapel near Oberkirch.

The rectory below the cemetery stands as a jewel of the place in the middle of the meadow and at the entrance to a small quiet garden. It was built in 1766 and impresses with its square dimensions and its high, four-sided hipped roof .
