Allgäuer Hochalpen is by far the largest nature reserve in the administrative region of Swabia and one of the largest nature reserves in the Federal Republic of Germany . With an area of 20,724 hectares , it is larger than some of the national parks in Germany .
The nature reserve was established by ordinance of January 16, 1992. The European bird sanctuary DE 8528-401 nature reserve Allgäu High Alps is coincident with the NSG ; The NSG and bird sanctuary are in turn part of the somewhat larger FFH area DE-8528-301 Allgäu High Alps .
Borderline
Beginning north of the “ Bschießer ” mountain peak , the border of the nature reserve runs along the border between Germany and Austria to the Kanzelwand . From there it continues past the Fellhornbahn lifts over the Warmatsgundtal into the Stillachtal . On the orographically right side of the Stillach valley, the border goes northwards to the level of Freibergsee. There the border runs south into the Trettachtal to Spielmannsau . On the orographically right side of the Trettach valley it goes north again. The Nebelhornbahn systems are left out. The border continues over the Rubihorn and the Sonnenköpfe into the Hintersteiner Valley. Hinterstein is left out. Finally, the border runs over the Stuibenkopf to the Bschießergipfel.
Protection purpose
According to the regulation, in the protected area:
- a part of the Allgäu Alps is protected in its entirety because of its outstanding beauty, diversity, uniqueness and tranquility,
- the large number of rare, endangered and vulnerable plant and animal species that occur there are protected,
- the diversity and the extent of the population of typical subalpine and alpine plant communities are preserved,
- the natural changes in the surface shape are left unaffected,
- the natural balance and forest stands are maintained in a stable manner, forest regeneration is promoted and the development of local mountain mixed forests is supported,
- the condition of this sub-area of the Allgäu Alps can be determined in order to preserve its natural potential and to heal its human-induced disturbances and damage.
An outstanding and still largely original part of the Allgäu Alps is protected.
