history

origin

The legends of the area point to Celtic origins. For centuries, the remote village had little contact with other communities.

Second World War

Towards the end of the Second World War, there were around 1200 refugees, 2000 soldiers and several hundred workers in Hinterstein, where fighting was no longer to be expected .

On April 29, 1945, Konrad Zuse and his wife were also registered in Hinterstein. An inscription on the house they lived in at the time commemorates that time. Zuse's Zuse Z4 was dismantled in a shed at the Steinadler inn and hidden from the Allied troops in the local gym, but was almost discovered several times. Numerous oil paintings and woodcuts with which he earned his living at the time come from Zuse's time in Hinterstein. An exhibition about famous people in the Ostrachtal in the Kurhaus in Bad Hindelang showed numerous documents about Zuse's time in Hinterstein.

Attractions

Noteworthy are the early classical church of St. Antonius from 1805 as well as the Antonius chapel from the 16th century with a high baroque altar, the Lady Chapel and the Hinterstein coach museum . Hinterstein has a church and four chapels.

Hinterstein also has a natural swimming pool, the Prinze Gumpe , which is fed by the water from the Zipfelbach. The bath is named after Prince Regent Luitpold , who is said to have appreciated a pool above the Zipfelsfall

Cultural institutions

Hinterstein has its own gym and festival hall. It is used for various events, such as the regular performances of plays or the annual village festival. A children's playground and sports field are located southeast of the town center.

legend

A long time ago, three "Wilde Fräulein" with the names Rezabell , Stuzzemuzz and Hurlahuzz are said to have lived in the Wildfräuleinstein (not far from the hiking trail to the Willersalpe) . The folk musical Hurlahutsch , which is based on this legend, was to be premiered on July 12, 2008 in Bad Hindelang.

Surroundings

The Ostrachtal begins about nine kilometers above Hinterstein at the gabled house , which can only be accessed by private car with a permit. From here there is a bus connection to Hinterstein. Between the Giebelhaus and Hinterstein there is the 85 m deep Eisenbreche in the Ostrach Valley , a gorge named after the minimal ore deposits that were previously mined there. Another 65 m deep gorge can be found in the Aueles Wändle mountain . On the way between Giebelhaus and Hinterstein you will also find the Hubertus Chapel as well as numerous crucifixes and memorials for those who died in the mountains.

The Schrecksee , which lies above Hinterstein at 1823 m in the mountains and has an island, is a 3½ hour walk from Hinterstein and can also be visited by non-mountaineers (appropriate equipment required). Numerous mountain tours can be carried out from Hinterstein. Around Hinterstein there are mountains such as the pyramid-shaped Hochvogel (2593 m), the Great Thumb (2280 m), the Rauhhorn (2240 m), the Gaishorn (2247 m), the triangular rocky gable (1902 m), the steep-grass snail (2268 m), the massive Große Wilde (2380 m) and numerous other mountains in the Allgäu Alps in the sky. Over the Willersalpe (1456 m) you can reach the Jubiläumsweg , which leads over the Rauhhornzug (the eastern part of the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps) to the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus (1846 m) of the Allgäu-Immenstadt section of the German Alpine Club at the foot of the Hochvogel .

Breitenberg

The well-known Hindelang via ferrata also leads from the Nebelhorn (2224 m) over the Wengenköpf (2235 m, 2206 m), the Grosse and the Little Thumb (2191 m), the Heubatspitze (2003 m) and the Breitenberg (1893 m) .

Managed alpine huts

From the gable house, hikes to alpine huts in the area are possible. The Schwarzenberghütte , which is open all year round, takes about an hour on foot from the gable house, and about 2½ hours from Hinterstein to the gable house. A three-kilometer toboggan run begins there in winter. After the junction to Schwarzenberg, the Engeratsgund-Alpe , Laufbichl-Alpe and Alpe Plättele are on the way to Obertal . The Laufbichl-Alpe has its own dairy where cheese is made every day in summer . Another alp is the Bärgündle-Alpe , which is located on the southern side of the gable in the Bärgündle Valley and is only cultivated in summer. It is located below the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus, from where many mountain tours can be undertaken. Directly above Hinterstein lies the Zipfelsalpe , which is a 1½ hour walk from Hinterstein. Two hours from Hinterstein is the Willersalpe , where you can stay overnight and the starting point for many mountain tours. In addition, 2½ km from Hinterstein on the way to the gabled house is the Konstanzer Jägerhaus , which the locals call a ski hut .

societies

There are several clubs in Hinterstein, such as the Hintersteiner Schützenverein or the Hintersteiner Sports Club. Hinterstein also has its own volunteer fire brigade and mountain rescue service .

In July 2016, thanks to many donations and support, the new rescue station of the Hinterstein mountain rescue service was inaugurated. So the very important helpers finally have their own base to be available for help and rescue in the area.
