Artificial island |
The Schrecksee is a small high mountain lake in the Allgäu Alps . It has an area of 10.2 hectares including the 0.74 hectare island.
location
The lake lies at 1813 m in a basin-like high valley, which is bordered by the Knappenkopf, Kirchendach and Kälbelespitze in the east, Kastenkopf and Lahnerkopf in the south and Älpelekopf in the west. The basin opens towards the northwest: after a small threshold, the terrain drops in a rock step by 300 meters to the Taufersalpe. The lake lies entirely in Bavaria , the border with Tyrol runs almost 300 meters east of the lake on the Kirchendachsattel.
Approach
The valley location is Hinterstein to the northwest . The path initially follows the Hintersteiner Tal. The ascent to the ruined Taufersalpe then begins at the power station, before reaching the lake via a rocky step. The Schrecksee is also on the Jubiläumsweg , which connects the Willersalpe with the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus . The lake can also be easily reached from the Landsberger Hütte via the Lahnerscharte.
Use and tourism
The Schrecksee was dammed by 8 meters in the 1950s in order to be able to use it better for generating energy. The small island in the Schrecksee emerged from this damming from a natural peninsula. The associated power station is located in the Hintersteiner Tal below the Taufersalpe at 938 m .
Despite the ban, camping at the Schrecksee is popular. Compliance with the ban is monitored by the police.
Trivia
The Schrecksee was voted the most beautiful mountain lake in the Alps in a vote in the Red Bull magazine Bergwelten in summer 2016.
