Head of Schönenbach
Schönenbach is a Vorsäß settlement belonging to the market town of Bezau in the rear Bregenzerwald in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . It is part of the traditional three-tier agricultural economy in the Bregenzerwald, which was designated a national intangible cultural heritage by the Austrian Commission for UNESCO . The settlement, which is not inhabited all year round, is located in the valley of the Schönenbach , a tributary of the Subersach , and can only be reached by car via the municipality of Bizau .

The gentle valley at about 1020 m above sea level has served for centuries . A. the pasture between the end of May and Kiliani (July 8th) as well as the Holy Cross Day (September 14th) and St. Gallus Day (October 16). Between these times, the herds of cattle are traditionally driven to the so-called high Alps above the tree line, where they spend the summer. In winter, the cattle are in the stables in the villages of the Bregenz Forest.
In addition, with the rise of tourism, the settlement was used as a local recreation area and holiday home. Schönenbach is the starting and ending point of numerous hikes in the neighboring mountains of the Bregenzerwald and Lechquellen Mountains . Chaplain Hugo Kleinbrod also recognized the suitability of the village, which is almost completely cut off from the outside world, for recreational purposes when he first initiated a holiday campaign for starving and disadvantaged children in Schönenbach in 1946. From the holiday campaign, which was represented with its own sleeping barracks in Schönenbach from 1950, the Vorarlberger Kinderdorf organization later emerged , which still organizes the “Schönenbach Children's Summer” every summer in Schönenbach.
In terms of traffic, the Vorsäß is accessible by a toll road through the municipality of Bizau. In the summer months from mid-June to the beginning of October, a bus on line 36 of the Bregenzerwald Landbus runs three times a day between Bezau and Schönenbach.
